The woman had fallen and couldn’t get up (sorry I couldn’t resist). She was all by herself but had a medical alarm, which she pressed, and we were there to help her a few minutes later.
She really didn’t want to go with us to the hospital but after an assessment and some conversation she agreed that it would be a good idea for her to go so that she could get her hip checked. It was hurting from the fall.
So, we got her all loaded up into the ambulance and away we went. I was with her in the back, filing out my paperwork and making small talk. I found out that she lived alone and had for many years. Suddenly, I felt the stir of the Holy Spirit inside of me. I smiled at her, knowing that God was about to touch her heart in some way.
I looked at her and was filled with compassion that came straight from God’s heart. “Would it be okay if I prayed for you?” I asked.
She struggled to lift her head as if there was an unseen chain around her neck. “Oh, that would be wonderful.” Her voice was weak and strained.
I put my hand on her shoulder and waited for God to begin to speak. I didn’t have to wait long as He began to show me how much He loved the woman and how much He wanted to be a part of everything in her life. He spoke to me about her loneliness and how she would never have to feel like she was alone again. He spoke to me about the freedom He was bringing her and how much abundant life there was in store for her. He showed me that depression was going to be defeated in her.
As I shared these things with her she grabbed my hand and squeezed. “Thank you so much.” There were tears in her eyes. “I’m so glad you’re here and that you’re a Christian.”
Yes God had certainly touched her heart…and mine. I finished by praying over her hip and lower back. By that time we’d arrived at the hospital and we placed her in the hospital bed. She thanked me again as I left the room.
People need Jesus. I know that sounds like a “duh” statement but hey, it’s what’s on my heart right now. Plus it’s really, really true. People need Him, His voice, His touch…His everything. And you and I, ordinary lovers of Jesus, are the ones He wants to move through in order to touch the hearts of those who desperately need Him in some way.
