Question (from England): We have a friend who drinks too much soda pop and I had a really bad dream about him the other night. Do you have information on the concerns about soda pop?
Answer: Yes: It is deadly. And diet soda is even more deadly. I gave up drinking soda about 15 – 20 years ago.
In 1905, the average person consumed 5 pounds of sugar in a year. Today the average American consumes 155 pounds of sugar a year, every year! The sugar in a regular soda compromises the immune system for several hours after drinking it. A damaged immune system allows cancer and many other diseases to develop within your body.
In a study, which followed nearly 43,000 men for an average of 22 years, found that those who habitually drank one 12-ounce sweetened beverage per day were 20% more likely to have a heart attack, fatal or otherwise, than men who drank none.
If you try to avoid the sugar by drinking diet soda, you run into other problems: There is evidence that the sweetening ingredient in diet pop turns into a deadly poison inside your body. In addition, the pH in soda pop is 1-2. Your body must maintain a pH of 7 in order to stay healthy. Cancer cannot develop unless the pH drops in your body, so again, drinking soda compromises your body's ability to fight disease. Water has a pH of 7. Your body is at least 70% water. Water has become my favorite beverage. Everyone needs 6-8 glasses of water per day to cleanse and nourish the body.
I’ve also heard that if you crave carbonated drinks, your body really needs more calcium. So instead you should eat high calcium foods like broccoli, kale, legumes, dairy, mustard, & sesame. Obviously if you crave a specific drink, this is an addiction and needs to be addressed as such.
We can eat or drink according to the lust of the flesh, or we can eat and drink to nourish health. We must make the decision to eat and drink to nourish our health. This honors God and the body He has given to us. Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. By making wise choices, we get to live long enough to fulfill our destinies, and we get to live in vibrant health.
The Church needs to take health and care of the body seriously. I believe it is a sin to neglect the body. Since our bodies, souls and spirits are connected, if the body is in poor health, our souls and spirits are damaged also.
Who is responsible for our health? We are! I believe everyone should take a minimum of one year to focus on health and learn how to properly care for your temple of the Holy Spirit. When I was 40 I focused on health for two years. I read about 200 books on health care and wrote three of my own.
I am now 60 and in much better health than I was at age 40. I have no aches, no pains, don’t get colds like I used to, am not on any medications, and I am ready for the next 25 years of my life.
I challenge you to take one year to focus on health and become personally responsible to care for your body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit. You can make changes beginning today that will revitalize you and make you feel better next year at this time than you do today. The life you save will be your own. You are the one who is responsible for the care of your body -- not the government, not your doctor, and not your church.
I challenge you to eat to live, not live to eat.
