Hearing from God is as simple as quieting yourself down, fixing your eyes on Jesus, tuning to flowing thoughts and flowing pictures and writing. These are the four keys Habakkuk used.
I will stand on my guard post and station myself on the rampart; And I will keep watch to see what He will speak to me, and how I may reply when I am reproved. Then the LORD answered me and said, "Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run (Hab. 2:1-2). Go here for an introduction to the four keys to hearing God's voice.
Two tests to let you know if the eyes and ears of your heart are working
Do the eyes of your heart work?
- Close your eyes and picture your living room. Can you see the sofa, the chairs? Is there a TV screen there? Can you see it? Is the TV on or off?
- Can you see yourself opening the door of your refrigerator? Can you see what is on the top shelf?
- If you can see this in your mind's eye, then the eyes of your heart work and God can show you pictures on this same screen which is inside you.
Do the ears of your heart work?
- Can you sing the song “Happy Birthday” to yourself? Can you do this inside your head?
- Can you hear the words in your head that you are singing? If you can do this you have just used the ears of your heart. When God speaks to you, it will be this same inner sound, except that it will be Him talking and not you singing to yourself.
Normal spiritual communication takes place in your inner being
- This is normally how you will see and hear from God, through these inner senses that you have just used.
- These two inner senses - the eyes and ears of your heart - can be used by you, by evil spirits, or by the Holy Spirit. The goal is to always present them to the Holy Spirit to fill and use. This way you are being led by the spirit (Rom. 8:14).
Don’t expect a booming bass voice
I used to expect that when God spoke to me it would be a booming bass voice. That has only occurred once in my life. The rest of the time His voice and vision have come through the above senses and it is simply inner dialogue.
Get "in spirit" so God can fill the eyes and ears of your heart
John says he was “in the spirit on the Lord's Day” (Rev. 1:10). So to get in the spirit you want to quiet your mind before Him. This can be done by coming into His presence with praise and worship (Ps. 100:4). As we do this, we quiet our active brain by fixing the eyes of our heart on Jesus, Who is with us, in a comfortable setting. You can choose this initial setting. You have gone from Beta to Alpha waves (i.e. from faster to slower brainwaves). This then postures you as a child. Children live mostly in Alpha for the first seven years of their lives. I find picturing myself as a child helps, as does putting a big smile on my face and then writing on my sheet of paper, “Lord, I love You. I give You today. Is there anything You would like to speak to me?”
Tune to flow with your eyes fixed on Jesus and write
The Holy Spirit is a River that flows within us (Jn. 7:37-39). I tune to flow while picturing Jesus with me in a comfortable setting. I begin writing whatever pictures and thoughts are flowing within me. The scene will come alive, and Jesus can take you anywhere He desires. No testing now. Simply write in faith. Testing will cut off the flow, so I write in faith. Then when the dialogue is over, I go back and test it, making sure it lines up with Scripture and the names of Jesus. For additional confirmation that I am on the right track, I ask my friend and spiritual advisor if their heart bears witness that what I wrote came from God. I read it to them or email it to them. Once they confirm it I get to run with it.

Major blocks you may need to address and remove
- I’m expecting a booming voice and powerful emotions. Solution: God’s normal voice is flowing thoughts.
- I’m doubting it can be this simple. Solution: Jesus has completed the work. I enter in by faith.
- I’m testing and judging while I am receiving. Solution: Write in faith and test later.
Start with a two-way love letter
Write for two to four minutes about why you love Jesus so much. Then with your eyes fixed on Jesus and tuned to flow, write for two to four minutes letting Jesus tell you how much He loves you. This exercise is the easiest way I know to begin two-way journaling.
