He's Only Mostly Dead

The Princess Bride.  Classic.  Anyway,

We were called for a cardiac arrest and arrived to find a middle-aged man lying on the floor not breathing and with no pulse.

I had a student with me who was being trained as a paramedic so I was immediately caught up into making sure she was managing the scene and patient appropriately.  I mostly observed but every now and then casually guided her in the direction she needed to be heading in.

She was doing fine but the patient wasn’t.  We followed our protocol but there was just no improvement.  The first heart rhythm we had was a flat line and there was no change.  My student had just given the last drug we were going to give.  It had been almost 20 minutes.  Hopelessness began to fill the room.  We were about to end resuscitation efforts.

At that moment a thought floated through my head.  It kind of caught me off guard because it’s one I normally have right from the get-go.  The thought was, I should pray.  I was a little surprised I hadn’t done that yet.  It’s been pretty normal for me to pray right away and be praying the entire time.

So I prayed.  It was a short prayer.  I can’t remember the words I said exactly but it wasn’t anything that lasted more than a couple of breaths.  However I do remember that I was looking at the heart monitor while I prayed and I do remember the heart rhythm changing the very instant I finished praying.

The instantaneous response was enough to make me double take.  2 minutes later we had a strong pulse with a great blood pressure and were speeding towards the hospital.

We’ve got to give God a chance.  Can we shift into the mindset that the last breath might not have to be the last breath?  Can we begin to ask God if He want’s us to intervene even in the most desperate or hopeless situations?

I’ve come to a place where I need to ask every time and if I feel ever so slight of a leading I must pray.  I must invite God to do something miraculous.  I must do it because I love Him.  I must do it because I’m desperate to share in His life.  I’m invested in His heart.  I must do it because He loves that person in need just as much as He loves me and I want His desires to be my desires.  I want to love like He loves-live like He lived.

It’s never too late.  We can do this.  You can do this.
