Do Bible teachers tell you that the study of the Bible is the most important feature of the Christian life? The Bible itself does not say this. Study is beneficial for all believers, but it comes easily for some and with difficulty for others. In an age of widespread literacy it is easy to assume that everyone is an academic or has an aptitude for study, but this is not so. Is literacy a prerequisite for godliness? If your aptitude for singing is greater than your aptitude for study then it is acceptable for you to put more emphasis on singing praise to me than in Bible scholarship. Do your bible scholars put an equal amount of time in worship? I know what talents I gave you and it honors and pleases me for you to fully employ them.

I promise you that my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Have you ever performed service for me that seemed strenuous and demanding? Yet how many times have you tried something on your own and encountered obstacles and ‘locked doors’ that prevented your progress no matter how much or how little effort you put forth? In like manner have you followed my leading and found a sense of divine favor that doors seemed to spring open before you and you found that you had the resources at hand as soon as you needed them? Didn’t the sense of peace and certainty of purpose make this seem like a light burden even if it involved strenuous effort?

My word tells you to pray fervently, to pray evermore, that men ought always to pray and not faint. What does this mean to you? If you think of prayer as the stating of requests then it means asking continually. Yet when my disciples asked me to teach them to pray, my response was in effect to tell them to worship and adore God. Do you think I answered their question? This does not fit the model of prayer as continual asking, but it is more sustainable and something you can do without feeling greedy and grasping. If your worship convinces you of my goodness and faithfulness and conforms you to me then only a little effort is required to ask for whatever you desire and receive it.

Do you have a network of fellow believers you interact with and rely on for support? If not you should ask me for this and I will give it to you. Not all of your brothers and sisters in the faith, even in your own church, will understand the road you are walking and your place on it. Yet there are some who are in a similar place and they will understand. You are drawn to them as kindred souls as they are to you, and you benefit from contact with them as they do with you. Though you are a stranger and sojourner in this world I have not left you alone. I said that where two or three are gathered in my name I would be there in the midst of them and I will give you two or three.

In the early church some of my disciples encountered a man preaching the repentance of sins according to the baptism of John. They took him aside privately afterward and explained the fullness of the Christian faith to him in greater detail, and he received it. You too will encounter those with good intentions and incomplete understanding. It is debatable whether you should enter a public confrontation with your enemies, but these people are not your enemies. Take a position of humility and grace to instruct them in greater understanding of the truth. Love them in such a way to make it easy for them to respond.

You have heard of children having wisdom beyond their years. This implies the expectation that wisdom will increase with age. You see this in varying degrees in different people, for this expectation does not come with a guarantee. Yet there is a source of wisdom other than the passage of time and gaining experience. There is wisdom from above which is not of this world. This is accessible to anyone of any age, for I have promised that if any lack wisdom and ask me for it I will give it to him. Divine wisdom is different from the wisdom of this world, so if you walk according to it others may not understand or approve, but I am still the best guide for your life. 

Are you impressed by signs and wonders, spiritual gifts and manifestations? Some believers reject these out of hand as no longer being valid for today, but they should be accepted since they are in the Bible. Others give them undue influence, which is also an incorrect emphasis. The true measure of a believer is not in signs and wonders but in Christlike character. This may not be demonstrative in a way that is obviously visible. Love is not proud or boastful and does not seek her own visible display. Yet there is a spiritual reality in which this love shines forth from those who have it within them. 

Does the phrase ‘pyramid scheme’ have a negative connotation for you? Do you avoid involvement in them? Do you realize that my church is based on a pyramid scheme? There is no central salvation department producing converts. The most effective means of evangelism is for those who have received life to share that life. This may appear to be a random and haphazard activity, but it is closely supervised by the Holy Spirit, without whom it could not take place, so it is organized from above. Do not hesitate to step forward and take part in this pyramid scheme. Trust me to make your efforts bear fruit. 

Your economy is based on mass production. This was made possible by items with interchangeable parts. This is such an efficient system that it has created a level of wealth previously unimaginable. The only thing in the process that can’t be standardized is the workers, regardless of the efforts to do so. Have you ever felt the pressure to conform to a standard to make you interchangeable with other workers? I also have standards for you to conform to, but they are not to make you like everyone else. I made you in a fearful and wonderful way, giving you a purpose and hope all your own. Don’t let the world squeeze you into its mold, but come to me to be conformed to the destiny I set before you.

Why do you like your friends? Are they the best people you know? Yet you are friends with some people even though they have issues, and they are friends with you even though you have issues of your own. So although your friendship is the highest honor you can bestow, and you admire good character, friendship is not strictly a measure of character. I want you to understand this when I call you my friend. I did not extend my friendship to you because you were the best, but because I loved you and wanted you to be in my Kingdom. Entering this friendship with me and abiding in me will change you into my likeness, even as my best friend.
