daily word - self-care

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you think that self-care is selfish; that it is self-indulgent to do something that doesn’t directly benefit anyone but you? It is not hard to find those who will level such an accusation against you. Do they commit every waking moment to selfless service of others? Have you ever heard the standard passenger briefing that in the event of a rapid decompression you should take care of your own oxygen needs before attending to those around you? In this way you can be a responder rather than a victim. Care for yourself that you may have the resources to care for others.

daily word - moral outrage?

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever experienced righteous indignation and moral outrage? Are you sure? Everyone experiences outrage and indignation, but are yours righteous and moral? For these things to occur together is extremely rare, and it is easy to judge yourself lightly when you are making judgments that I would not make. What would truly righteous indignation look like? The righteous part would require a willingness to make a personal sacrifice to implement restorative rather than retributive justice.

daily word - build

Dale Cresap's picture

Are you a builder? Some people have an aptitude and a passion for building and others do not, but those who do generally don’t start from scratch. They use kits or plans, and obtain the appropriate materials for what they are building. It is generally obvious from the finished product if the builder used whatever materials were available. To extend the metaphor, you are building a life. Do you feel like you have all the special materials you need for this task, or does it feel like you are making do with what you can get your hands on?

daily word - inner or outer

Dale Cresap's picture

I told you to stand fast therefore in the liberty in which I have made you free, do not be entangled again in the yoke of bondage. Do you see liberty coming in two versions, internal and external? Which do you think is more important? Which do you think this verse refers to? Do you get the sense that the yoke of bondage referred to in this passage refers to thought patterns, habits and prejudices that are holding you back from an abundant life? You are sensitive to encroachments on your external liberty, which limit your freedom of action.

daily word - time to move

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever gone through a major life transition? You may postpone such experiences because the upheaval and disruption are so great, but that is the price you pay for moving into a situation that is better for you in the long term. So there is a tradeoff between short term pain and long term gain. The transition may not be as traumatic as you imagine it. It is more a matter of letting go of certainty to face the unknown. How do you know when the time is right to change? When the pain or restraint of staying put are greater than the risk of moving forward into an unknown future.

daily word - blank check

Dale Cresap's picture

How often do you write a blank check? How often do you commit to a purchase without knowing what it will cost? The gospel even warns against doing this, and encourages you to count the cost. This may be the Biblical commandment that is followed by more people than any other. But this same principle can apply beyond purely monetary exchanges. Can you see that safety and liberty are held in tension one with the other, so if you insist on more of one you will get it at the expense of the other?

daily word - convicted?

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever been convicted? This term has a legal sense but for this case consider the moral sense. Conviction of sin leads to repentance. What has been most effective in convicting you? The written word can do this, and believers commonly encounter forceful spoken messages from those with positions of authority in the church. But these are not the only alternatives. What about the unspoken and even unaware examples of those who act with an integrity that you do not yet possess? You have heard that actions speak louder than words.

daily word - secure

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you look to find the best in others? Does this sound like an approach that is both reasonable and loving? Yet it requires a high level of both maturity and security. Insecure and immature people tend to look for the worst in others. This provides a basis for exclusion and superiority. I spoke of those who sought to justify themselves and it never led to a positive outcome. If you are a child of grace and secure in that position, then you don’t need to establish yourself on the shortcomings of others. This is easier said than done.

daily word - status job?

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you have a high-status job? This is a real concept whether it is discussed openly or not, and everyone knows where they fit in the hierarchy. Those who serve are considered to be of lower status than those who are served, but even within the realm of servants those who serve higher status people outrank those who serve lower status people, because they ‘tag along’ on the status of those they serve. You may recall that I addressed this matter of serving and turned the whole order upside down. By conventional logic those who serve the least of these would be at the bottom of the order.

daily word - Fathers

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you noticed that fathers have an image problem today? In popular culture they are portrayed as hapless and stupid. The most extreme insult that can be expressed today involves the accusation of patriarchy. How do you portray me? I am transcendent and ineffable, so I do not lend myself to exact parallels. So when I wanted to reveal myself to humanity I could have chosen any magnificent and powerful metaphor I wanted. I could have said that I was like an oak tree, or giant redwood, or an elephant, or a whale, or a mountain. But what did I in fact select from all things?

This is my story of how my cardiac event was resolved by combining the best in medical care, Christian spirituality, and nutrition.

I was NOT supposed to have a cardiac event. I ate a healthy diet, exercised several times a week, consumed lots of great nutrition and sought to live destressed by abiding in Christ. This story contains the lessons I learned in the months of healing after having emergency surgery which involved five heart bypasses.

How Do YOU Know? MP3 Downloads

by Mark Virkler | 12 Audio Sessions

How do you know? What is the process you use to discover truth? I did not ask that question during the first 25 years of my life. I used eleven different methods for discovering truth including: if my parents said so, then it was so. If my teacher said it was so, then it was so. If my pastor said it was so, then it was so. If my theology said it was so, then it was so. I have discarded them all and adopted a twelfth method, which is in harmony with what the Bible teaches. We teach you this method in this series.

Knowing God's thoughts! It is possible. His thoughts are not our thoughts; His ways are not our ways. However, we can learn how to "reason together with God" (Isa. 1:18), and receive His insights and His revelations on each and every area of our lives. The process really is quite simple.

How to Speak in Tongues MP3

How to Speak in Tongues MP3

Speaking in tongues involves a miracle wherein you yield your vocal cords to the flow of the Holy Spirit, trusting that God is forming the syllables you speak into a language. It may be a language of men or of angels (1 Cor. 13:1). You choose to speak (Acts 2:4) but you choose not to form the syllables consciously, and instead let the Spirit give the utterance (Acts:2:4). The goal of this short teaching is to help people understand the part they need to play and the part the Holy Spirit plays when it comes to the miracle of speaking in tongues.

How to Walk by the Spirit MP3s

How to Walk by the Spirit MP3s

by Mark Virkler | 12 Sessions

Are you like many western Christians who have been taught little about how to sense their spirits? Do you have trouble even defining what spirit sensations feel like within you, much less recognizing them? This training was birthed from Mark’s passion to live out of his spirit, and thus release the anointing of God. The problem he faced was lack of clear biblical definition as to what his spirit felt like. So Mark looked up every verse in the Bible on heart and spirit.

Mountain-Moving Faith MP3

Mountain-Moving Faith MP3

by Mark Virkler | 62 Minutes

God is our Dream Maker! He has placed a dream within the heart of each of us that only He can supernaturally bring to pass. God gave an impossible dream to Abraham, our Father of Faith. In this powerful message, Mark will show you how God filled the five senses of Abraham’s spirit with His truth and birthed a miracle out through him. And you will learn how you can walk in the same faith while you hear, see, ponder, speak and act out of the Father’s initiative, allowing Him alone to fill the senses of your spirit.
