This brief booklet walks a person through the main obstacles to speaking in tongues, and shows how each one can be successfully overcome. It is down-to-earth, practical and biblical, and in it Mark Virkler shares the struggles he went through before he was able to speak in tongues. Some were theological issues and some simply practical issues, like the fact that if I am going to speak in tongues, I will need to speak. Otherwise, nothing happens.

You mentioned in your story about receiving tongues that it took some time to get it down right and a year before you spoke in front of anyone in tongues. My question is that how long did you think it took before you felt fluent? Did you stumble over yourself for a while and how long? Did you keep thinking you were repeating the same thing over again? And because of these things all going on in your head how long did it take before you felt you were not making it up?

Dear Hungry and Searching,
Well, it doesn’t need to take you as long as it took me. I am not even sure how long it took me as I received the gift of speaking in tongues 40 years ago. Here is how you can shorten the awkward phase as you begin speaking in tongues:
Give your mind something to do which facilitates the process, rather than sitting there in judgment of the process.
So I tell my mind, “You do not need to judge each syllable to try to determine if it is a language or not” (not that my mind even has the capacity to perform such a function).
“Instead, I want you to picture the throne room as John did in Revelation 4, and see the multitude worshipping before His throne, and then picture us entering in with them in worship to the King Who is seated upon the throne.”
Now my mind is facilitating the spiritual encounter of worshipping in tongues, and the flow of tongues expands more quickly and easily. Try this for several days and see where it takes you.

When talking to the leadership team at Catch the Fire in Toronto, they confirmed that when they pray for people, not everyone is slain in the Spirit. For those who don't know, being slain in the Spirit is falling over (generally backward), when someone is in front of you praying for you. The understanding is that the Holy Spirit is coming upon them and this weakens them so they fall down, and then normally they rest under the Spirit's power as they lay on the floor and He ministers to them.
The book Discover Your Mission Now by Dave Ferguson tells about a doctoral thesis: “Blessers vs. Converters.” The researcher looked at the results of two short-term missions teams using different missional strategies.
Dr. Mark Virkler introduced me to the term "throne room worship." Though I have done what throne room worship is, I had never specifically termed it as such. Recently I was at a seminar where Mark taught briefly on throne room worship. This was a 3 day seminar at Singing Waters Ministries where I am the worship leader. He asked this question. “During worship, where are you looking?” After people gave a few responses, he summed it up by saying, “We can be staring at the lyrics on the screen, or at the back of the person’s head in front of us, or we can be looking to the Lord, fixing our eyes on Jesus, coming into His throne room with all of Heaven and the angels and saints.”
