daily word - empathy for enemies?

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you consider yourself to be an empathetic person? To whom do you extend empathy? Are you kind to those who are kind to you, and lend to those who are able to repay, and show favor to those who hold similar beliefs, values, and ideology as yourself? What reward do you expect from your Father in heaven for that? Doesn’t everyone do that? I taught you to love your enemies, do good to those who hate and persecute you, and lend to those who could not repay you. The true test of empathy is not in how you treat your friends, but in how you treat your enemies.

daily word - consider the source

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever heard someone say, consider the source? This is usually used in a negative way, in response to a stupid remark by some other person. It implies that you could  not expect an intelligent statement from them. Have you ever heard it used in a positive sense? Are there people that you admire for their wisdom and good judgment? Have they ever made statements that seemed odd or out of character? Yet you should know better than to dismiss them lightly. Here you can consider the source in a positive sense. Examine their statements for a deeper meaning you may have missed.

daily word - run the race

Dale Cresap's picture

My word uses the illustration of running a race like you intend to win it. What conclusion do you draw from that? Do you see it as a competition in which you strive to beat your opponents? This would be the wrong conclusion. The proof of this is in the conduct of those Christians who behave as if they are in competition with their fellow believers. If not that, then what? The passage refers to internal focus. Structure your own life and do all that is necessary to prepare yourself to put forth your own best possible effort.

daily word - garage sale

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever held a garage sale? This is one way to get rid of the clutter in your house. Did you sell everything you owned, or just the things that were outgrown, no longer of use, or ill-advised acquisitions? Most people consider it worth the effort to get rid of clutter from their homes. Have you ever held a spiritual garage sale? Perhaps you should. In addition to essential truth, you can acquire beliefs and thought patterns that were bad choices to begin with, or were once useful but have served their purpose and no longer are.

daily word - faith instruction?

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you encountered parents with different faith traditions who agree to raise the children with no faith influence on the premise that they will be free to make up their own minds when the time comes? What would you expect to happen as a result? On what basis would they make a decision? They will learn that faith is unimportant. Haven’t you seen children raised in any faith tradition feeling free to make up their own minds to change if they so desire? It would be better to find a way to raise the children that honors more than one faith tradition.

daily word - truth search

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever found something in a place you did not expect to find it? Was this a pleasant surprise if it was something you wanted? Do you know where to find truth? For many believers this is a narrow search area, and it is considered more by the source than by the content. But what if you come across something from outside your faith tradition that resonates deeply with you and provides an accurate description of real world behavior? Could that be true? Could there be truth outside your tradition? I promised to lead you into all truth.

daily word - Christian Science?

Dale Cresap's picture

Does the phrase ‘Christian Science’ seem like an oxymoron to you? Some believers see science and faith as mortal enemies, and others try to turn their faith into a science. Neither approach is correct. Science and faith are not natural enemies. They should be understood to operate in different realms. Science does well to describe the behavior of the physical world, but it does not speak to some questions that every person faces whether they claim to be spiritual or not. It doesn’t have answers about love and beauty and suffering and death.

daily word - pulling forward?

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever expressed an interest in doing something but not followed through with it? If you tell your friends, what question will they ask in reply? Isn’t it some version of, ‘what is holding you back’? There can be many reasons, but could this be the wrong question to ask? Perhaps a better approach would be to ask, ‘what is pulling you forward’? Desire is a powerful force, and there is tension when it meets resistance. Desire will have to overcome resistance to prevail. This isn’t likely to happen if you focus only on the obstacles in the way.

daily word - passion?

Dale Cresap's picture

What gets you out of bed in the morning? For mothers it is children. For most people it is a job. You may look at these as duties and obligations. What would get you out of bed in the morning if you had nothing external to require it? Everyone can and should have a passion. This is an internal drive that you cannot explain or deny. How many people dream of life with no obligations? This is unrealistic for most people, but if you could attain it, what would you devote your life to?
