Jesus Sets the Pattern for Living Out of Divine Initiative

Mark Virkler's picture

We are to live and walk by the Spirit (Gal. 5:25). Jesus models this lifestyle for us. Let's see how He does it!

Jesus tells us over and over HOW He lives, making sure we GET IT.

Constant repetition means Jesus is saying to us: "This is important. This is the way I live. This is the way you are to live. Imitate Me."

  1. Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. (Jn. 14:10)
  2. Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel." (Jn. 5:19-20)
  3. I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. (Jn. 5:30)
  4. I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world. (Jn. 8:26)
  5. He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him. (Jn. 8:29)
  6. I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father. (Jn. 8:38)
  7. Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. (Jn. 8:42)
  8. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father. (Jn. 10:18)
  9. That you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father. (Jn. 10:38)
  10. For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. (Jn. 12:49)
  11. So that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. (Jn. 14:31)

Jesus makes the Spirit-anointed lifestyle available for us to live!

  1. I hear God's voice: "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish (Jn. 10:27-28)
  2. I see God's vision: 'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;(Act 2:17)
  3. I am led by God's Spirit to the truth: "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. (Joh 16:13)
  4. I walk and live by the Spirit: If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. (Gal. 5:25)

  7. The worthlessness of anything done without the Spirit: It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. (Jn. 6:63 & Heb. 6:1 - REPENT from DEAD works)
