The Sledgehammer of God by LaWanda

“And the God of peace will swiftly pound Satan to a pulp under your feet!

And the wonderful favor of our Lord Jesus will surround you.” Romans 16:20 TPT

I recently discovered a new verse in the Bible, Romans 16:20.  Well, of course, it wasn’t a new verse, but it jumped off of the page to me on that day.  “God… will pound Satan to a pulp under my feet and the wonderful favor of our Lord Jesus will surround you!”  What a glorious picture that is.  As I pondered that verse and set about memorizing it, the Lord gave me an exercise that I can use that will make this verse even more real to me when I have something that is coming against me.  It has blessed me and I hope it blesses you.

Read the verse Romans 16:20.  With that verse in your mind, picture God with a sledgehammer in his hand.  A sledgehammer, in case you don’t know what it is, is a hammer with a long handle and a solid, very heavy head.  Sometimes they are used for splitting wood. Now God is bigger than a giant, bigger than a mountain, bigger than the solar system, bigger than the entire universe that He created, bigger than ANYTHING we can imagine. GOD. For God to be this big, that would have to be a HUGE hammer.  (Now we know that God could do what is stated in this verse with a thought or a spoken word or the breath of His Spirit, but for the purposes of this exercise, we are setting that aside.)

And then you have, Satan, a created being, an angel.  Angels are reported to be huge by those who have seen them.  They are definitely huge compared to us.  More than the giants in the Bible, like Goliath, who was 9 ft 6 inches.  The angels in Revelation 12:17 are said to be 144 cubits tall.  That is 216 ft.  Now however you want to measure it, that is ENORMOUS!

So if you can, picture Satan at God’s feet. God swings that huge sledgehammer and it lands on Satan’s head.  Imagine what would happen.  That is what He is doing for you right now!  He is pounding Satan into a pulp for YOU!

Sometime people have trouble picturing things or imagining them so we are going to give you a picture in real life of what this might look like.  It is my hope that you will walk away with a picture of how BIG your God is and be confident of how He is constantly working on your behalf.  I encourage you to not just read this exercise but to actually do it.

Now, picture yourself with a sledgehammer in your hand.  Next,  picture a watermelon or a canteloupe at your feet.

Repeat the words of Romans 16:20 out loud several times.  As you are saying those words, pick up the sledgehammer and with all your might swing it and strike the watermelon at your feet.  Then strike it again and again.  As you watch the watermelon begin to disintegrate, continue speaking this verse as you strike it.  Feel the emotions that arise as you see the enemy who has been tormenting you with this issue and the issue itself, being pounded to a pulp.  Continue to stike the melon until it is unrecognizable. Now, this is you in your own strength doing this.  What would it look like if God were the one holding that sledgehammer?

In the Passion, the notes on this verse say that the word that was translated as “pound into a pulp”, sontribo, could also mean “to beat someone to a jelly.”  This is what our Savior, the Lord God Almighty, has said that he will do to our enemies.  And that after He does it, the enemy is under OUR feet and God’s favor isn’t just on us, it surrounds us!!!

He is protecting us in the present – in our future – and also from what is behind us, from our past.  Psalm 138:5 in the Passion says it like this, “You’ve gone into my future to prepare the way and in kindness, you follow behind me to spare me from the harm of my past.  With your hand of love upon my life, you impart a blessing.”

Notice that it says “You’ve gone into MY future”.  This is not a generic future.  This is personal.  He’s gone into MY future.  And then…all those things in your past. Well,  I don’t know if you have anything in your past that you are not real proud of, but I sure do.  He’s saying that He’s got those, too.  He’s protecting us from having those things affect us NOW!  He has pounded my guilt and shame into a pulp, along with the enemy, and they are no longer in my head or my heart, they are under my feet!!!  What a God we serve!!! Now, give Him some praise and thank Him for setting you free.  Repeat this exercise anytime you have an issue that just will not go away.  You will get relief and God will get the GLORY. And Satan will get the pounding he so richly deserves!   Praise God!
