Power from on High by Charles Finney - Notes

In cleaning out my files I found these summarizing notes of the book “Power from on High.” These concepts were part of what formed my thinking in the early years of my ministry.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you (Acts 1:8).

There is a great difference between the peace of God in your heart and the power of God in your heart. Sometimes I would find myself in great measure, empty of this power. After humbling myself, and crying out for help, the power would return upon me with all its freshness. This has been the experience of my life.

Reasons why people who ask for this enduement do not receive it

1. Sin: Iniquity (self-indulgence), resists the conviction of sin, refuses to confess to all the parties concerned. Refuses to make restitution to injured parties.
2. Unloving: Uncharitable, censorious, resentful, evil tempers, causes dissension, revengeful spirit
3. Proud: Being self-dependent, prejudiced, uncandid, worldly ambition, indolence, impatience
4. Deception: Dishonest, rejects further light, selfish for his denomination, resists revelation, justifying wrong
5. Too little prayer: Neglects prayer, too busy, too much study, no complete consecration, unbelief

How to receive this enduement of power

1. Faith: In all of God’s promises
2. Unselfishness: Preferring others
3. Pure heart: Conscience void of offense, full restitution made to any who you wronged
4. Clean hands: The settling of disputes and animosities among brethren
5. Humility: Taking up the stumbling blocks
6. Forgiveness: Toward those who have wronged you
7. Truthfulness: Mean what you say
8. Persistence: Seeking and diligently using all means and expense
9. Prayer: In the name of Jesus, fervent, entreating, travail
