Einstein - "I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking." Let's discover a way to cultivate flow as a group!
Fundamental Rules for Brainstorming Sessions
- Judgment and criticism are forbidden.
- Freewheeling is welcomed.
- Go for quantity.
- Seek to combine and improve ideas as they are mentioned.
Additional Guidelines for Brainstorming
- Make your problem specific, rather than general.
- Use brainstorming only for problems that call for idea-finding, rather than judgment.
- 30 minutes is a good length for a brainstorming session.
- Begin the brainstorming session by explaining the four basic rules given above. Put them on a whiteboard or placard.
- Avoid an atmosphere of perfectionism. Keep it fun.
- Encourage ideas that are sparked by previous ideas. Encourage a chain reaction, where individuals feed creatively off the ideas of others.
- Have a non-participant present to record every idea that is mentioned.
- Return to journaling after brainstorming, asking God which of these ideas He wants you to work with at this time. Make sure that you are in the presence of the Lord as you journal, so that you are not praying with an idol in your heart (i.e. the issue you are praying about). Record in your journal what the Lord says.
Why Brainstorming Works
- Through a chain reaction, you spark each others' creativity.
- People tend to think up more ideas in a group than alone.
- When competing to think up ideas, the output can be increased by 50%.
- Accepting all ideas rewards individuals for their behavior.
